  1. Coolidge and Hoover

October 27, 2011 by Hubbard County Historical Museum Director

These photos were found in the museum.

Coolidge and Hoover 1928 most likely

    Coolidge and Hoover three

    Coolidge and Hoover two

I believe these were taken in 1928.  President and Mrs. Coolidge must have invited Hoover to the White House.  President Coolidge and President Elect Hoover were not great friends.  However the did present a united front for the American people for these photographs.

Drysdale Perry of Superior Wisconsin took the first photo it is Number 67.  The last photo is Number 64.  The middle photo could also be by Drysdale Perry however it is not marked.

I have no idea who donated these to the museum or how they came about owning them.

  2. Found At the Museum: Coolidge

October 20, 2011 by Hubbard County Historical Museum Director

I found this in one of the file cabinets at the museum.

    Coolidge Speach 1928

It is a Drysdale Perry 77.  He had a photo studio in Superior Wisconsin.

    Back of Coolidge speech photo

This is the back of the photo. It says:

Coolidge speech at Cannon Falls 1928.

It is indeed the 30th President of the United States Calvin Coolidge.  On July 29, 1928 he gave a speech dedicating a memorial to Colonel William Colville who was the commander of the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.  You can find the full story here.

There is no identifying museum number on this photograph.  I have no idea who donated it..or if it was part of an estate.  Just one of the many mysteries that I discovered at the museum last summer.

    Thanks for reading!

  3. Fire Department and Band

October 13, 2011 by Hubbard County Historical Museum Director

This is a very old photo of the Park Rapids Fire Department and the Park Rapids Band.

Park Rapids Band and Fire Department in a Parade in Bemidji

This parade was celebrating something in Bemidji.  Most likely this is a photo from around 1900. Just think of the preparation and the time involved to travel to Bemidji…they must have taken the train.

On Monday October 17, 2011 the Historical Society in having their Annual Meeting  7PM at Northwoods Bank.  Please join us.  Refreshments will be served.

  4. Harvest Photo

October 6, 2011 by Hubbard County Historical Museum Director

I found this old photo one day in the museum.  I just happened to know the name on the back.

    Byron S Knapp

The photo was taken near Clifford North Dakota.  Now you may ask..what is she telling us by showing us a photo from North Dakota?

Times were hard, many young men had to find work wherever they could.  If that meant going over to North Dakota and working during the grain harvest..then that is what they did.

Byron S. Knapp was a well known Park Rapids area resident.  I called his Grandson and shared the photo with him.

We are having our annual meeting on Monday October 17 at 7PM at Northwoods Bank.  Everyone is invited to attend!  Refreshments will be served.
