Women’s Rights

August 24, 2012 by Hubbard County Historical Museum Director

Please join us on Monday August 27 at 7:30 for a program with Alice and her friends the suffragettes. Local women will portray famous women and present the history of women’s rights in Park Rapids Minnesota and beyond. Refreshments will be served. The meeting will be held in the new courthouse downstairs meeting room which is handicap accessible.

The Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States stated in part:

"The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex."

This happened in 1920.  Women have been voting for 92 years.  It was a hard fought battle.

These women from Park Rapids in  1905 to 1910 were not allowed to vote..but they could wear  very large hats.  This may be a photo of Marie Steele and another woman by the last name of Steele.
