  1. Remember When: High School Band

August 30, 2012 by Hubbard County Historical Museum Director

Recently I was browsing through the 75th Anniversary Souvenir Album that was published in 1955.

It is called “A Book of Cherished Memories of the Old Days in Park Rapids, Minnesota.”

Park Rapids High School Band 2

The school band is also the official Chippewa Band having been actually adopted into the Chippewa Tribe at an impressive ceremony in 1952.

After doing some research, I find that according to band members “Yes, that is true.”  BUT it was in May of 1953.  It coincided with the induction of James Nunn SR. into the Chippewa Tribe.

Now my question for you.  Were you a member of this High School Band?  Do you recall marching down the street in Ponsford Minnesota in May of 1953?  Do you have any old photos of the band that we could scan?  We will be having a program in the spring of 2013 that all the High School Band members are invited to attend.  Dick Nunn Grandson of James Nunn Sr. gave the Museum a DVD copy of the band marching and his grandfather’s ceremony.  It will be shown at the meeting in May. The movie was made by Ray Masog.

I am often asked if I know what happened to these uniforms.  They were sold. (Per a High School Band member)
