Remember When : Old Meat Market

October 20, 2012 by Hubbard County Historical Museum Director

Last weeks photo stirred up some questions. Did Ernie Klicker edited to Weber own Ernie’s Grocery and meat market/locker plant?  We think so.  It is the white building in the photograph. Old meat market 2 001 (2)

Here it is next to the old Municipal Liquor Store.  I am not sure what year this photo was taken.

My husband can remember walking to the locker plant with his Mother to get meat out of their locker.

This building was possibly Chucky’s  before it became Ralph’s.

Present day this lot is empty, there is a fence around it and it is right next door to Art’s Place.

If you have any information about this building please leave a comment.

  1. The white building on the corner that you are refering to was owned by Ernie Weber from Staples, Mn. I believe Irene Gibson (Lois Hawkin’s Mom) worked there for many years. They just built a new grocery in Staples and it is still called “Ernies Market”, and I believe the one here in P.R. was called the same. Ernie passed away several years ago, his widow lived at Grover Shores during the summer at one time.

    From Ruth:

I remember going here as a child. this was the “corner” grocery store and they gave out S&H Green stamps. I also remember them having “gold” stamps. the filled books were used towards purchases. Memories!

    From Veronica:

I happen to know this building very well. My Ex-husband and I had a furniture store in it, which was named General Merchandise Sales. I’m pretty sure we were the last business in it before it was torn down. Then we moved our furniture store just across the street to the north. We did sell the business but got it back. I must say, the building was in lots better shape than that when we had it. It was exciting to see a picture of it!! Such a long time ago & many memories, for sure!!!

  1. From Charlene B.
Ernie worked in that building (next to the “Muni”, but the meat market he owned, was purchased from Ressler’s. It was located where Pioneer Park is now.
