This is a photograph of the telephone office in Park Rapids Minnesota in 1961.

See that pretty little gal standing on the far left?  She is a volunteer here at the museum!  These operators were the link between your home and the outside world.  They summoned the fire and police from this office.  The police sat on main street and watched a light bulb that hung over the street, when the bulb came on they knew to call the telephone office to get the details.

August 26th Monday evening at 7 PM please join us for a program called “Small Talks” by local women.  Telephone operators, car hops and more.  It should be a fun program filled with memories!  The program will be held in the Lower Level of the Law Enforcement Center just North of the museum.  Enter the door marked Social Services and take the elevator downstairs.  Refreshments will be served.

That is a nifty photo and so nice that beautiful woman volunteers – she is beautiful “inside” too.

That’s a winner! I believe the lady in front, on the right is Margaret James, wife of Albert James and mother of Jeanette and Stan. I was in the same youth group at First Baptist Church (where the MacDonald’s is now!) with Stan and Jeanette, and we used to go to their parents’ home for get-togethers. Lots of memories. I had forgotten, though, that Mrs. James had been a telephone operator.
