  3. Early Hubbard County 1881-1885

March 23, 2013 by Hubbard County Historical Museum Director

1881 : Frank and Gilbert Rice arrived and built a flour mill on the rapids of the Fish Hook River.  The river was dammed to provide power for the mills.  ( Two of the millstones from the mill are on the lawn of the Historical Museum.)

1882: Dr. Walling arrived and three weeks later Dr. C.W. Cutler joined him.

1882:  Since there were two Doctors in town the first pharmacy was opened by David Mandigo and son.

1883: The legislature detached 16 Congressional Townships from Cass County and organized Hubbard County. Park Rapids was named the county seat.

The first board of Commissioners, Smith Booram, J. W. Jay and Dr. C. E. Cutler who were all appointed by the Governor held their first meeting.  They appointed the following officers:

    Auditor – V. E. Noble

    Register of Deeds – F. C. Rice

    Sheriff  – Robert Shields

    Coroner -  David Mandigo

    Treasurer – John Jarvis

Superintendent of Schools – Samuel T. Todd

    Surveyor – Cyrus Blair

1883 to 1885: A makeshift Court House was established in the R. F. Shields general store on Lot 1 Block 5 Park Rapids.

1885: Years after the first settlers took claims on Hubbard Prairie, Hubbard County was named in honor of Lucius F. Hubbard who was the Governor of Minnesota from 1882 to 1887.

1886:  Petition was filed to relocate the county seat to Hubbard (formerly known as Mantor).

    ********************

From what I have heard the people of Hubbard felt that they were the oldest settled area of the county and it only followed that they should be the county seat.  Rightfully so.

The Railroad was going to be coming into the area.  Up to this point Verndale was the train station where goods and supplies were delivered.

I heard..Back then towns had to pay so much a foot/mile to have the railroad come through your town.  Hubbard refused to pay..and Park Rapids paid..so that is why the County Seat is still Park Rapids.

If anyone has more to add to this bit of history ..please leave a comment.

  4. Early Hubbard County 1879 to 1883

March 14, 2013 by Hubbard County Historical Museum Director

    Early Hubbard County history.

During the winter of 1879-1880 the first logging camp was established on Palmer Lake Crow Wing Township by H.B. Manson.  Logs were floated down the Crow Wing River to Motley.

The second logging camp was on Portage Lake.  Logs  were driven down Fish Hook river to Shell River, then to Crow Wing River and finally Motley.

Agricultural development began in 1979.  Wheat and Oats were grown.

The first school in the county was in Park Rapids in 1882 it was called the Pioneer School.  The second school was established in Hubbard (Mantor) a few years later.  Hubbard was better known as Mantor in the early days.  They were school district number 2 and Park Rapids was district number 1.

In 1885 the population in the area was still in the south western part of the county.  73 families were in Hubbard Township, 63 families in Todd Township, 26 in Henrietta Township and 22 in Straight Lake Township.

I found one reference that said “ The first Newspaper in the county was the Park Rapids Enterprise,  first issue on July 1882 by Henry R. Cobb.”  ( I don’t think it was called the Enterprise back then.) Perhaps someone from the Enterprise has the facts.

The early settlers cut their own trails and when they could not ford the streams they built bridges.  Of course they chose the easiest routes, which resulted in winding trails.  On the trail between Park Rapids and Hubbard both Long Lake and Fish Hook River were forded.

The first white child born in Hubbard County was a girl, Tessie Jay, later known as Laura Foster.

The first Doctor arrived in 1882. P.A. Walling arrived with his wife Roselind , two children and seven silver dollars in  his pocket.

Land sold for $4.00 a acre.

In 1883 Hubbard County was organized and Park Rapids was named the county seat.

  5. Three Shell Prairies

March 9, 2013 by Hubbard County Historical Museum Director

What do you know about the Three Shell Prairies?  It is a question that comes up quite often at the museum.  If you have any information to share or know where there is a map that denotes the boundaries of these prairies please share.

I have unearthed the following information:

The open places which the early settlers found in the South Eastern part of Hubbard County were known as the Shell Prairies.  The First Shell Prairie was at Hubbard.  The Second Shell Prairie was Park Rapids and the Third  Shell Prairie was in Becker County at Osage/Ponsford.

It is believed that at one time nearly all of the prairies grew timber which was blown down and later burned.   The Indians would burn the prairies to make better pasture for deer.

Henry Vale and James Compton ( correction John Higgens Campton) settled in the west half of section 28 of Hubbard Township in April 1879 ( some references say 1878).  They came from Ohio to Verndale in Wadena County by railroad and made the remainder of the trip by team.  Others soon followed and settled near them.  It was not long before there were settlers on the Second Shell Prairie or Park Rapids. Most of the new settlers came from Ohio.

Park Rapids Townsite was filed by C. O. Todd on 1879.

  6. Main Street : 1992

February 26, 2013 by Hubbard County Historical Museum Director

Lets look back 21 years to 1992.

Antlers was still in business. What year did they close?  They served a mighty fine breakfast..and a great cup of coffee.  Dahl’s Bakery was still open too.  I used to buy an occasional raspberry filled bismarck there.

We have a room in the museum that is dedicated to business and resorts.   If you have any old business items that you would like to donate please contact the museum.

I have a request from one of our Facebook followers for a photograph of the old Log School House in Hubbard..if anyone has one that we could scan..please leave a comment.  If you know any of the history of the old school house please share!

    Info from Ken:

Wilson Brothers Logging Company, Later Wilson Connor Logging, ran the Livery Stables where horses from Logging were kept and used in the winters for logging and shipped to North Dakota for wheat harvesting in the Fall. George & Annie Pratt-Wilson lived in the old, much added on to, home just north of River Heights Apartments next to the old Minnesota Power & Light garage by the dam. George and Brothers Tom & Dick Wilson later bought rights to (family lore is that they won the rights in a poker game) Ford & Buick Autos and built the Wilson Auto Livery building later known as the Ford Garage with livery stables where the skating rink was located just south of the Ford Garage.
